WAYFINDING FOR KIDS

Globally in Luxembourg, there is a real problem getting an audience to the museums. The state and City of Luxembourg have tried several measures. An attraction an fun for the kids is a great means to get a new audience used to consuming museum culture and to shorten the distance to go to a museum for families.

Wulles “The Wild Man” represents the “uncultured” “simple” person. The children feel close to him. He has quite some things in common with children, apart from being approximately their height, he has a lot still to discover, has all kinds of mood-swings, good and bad and is overall a friendly, curious little fellow.

The ‘Wëlle Mann’, a statue, is amongst the first item the museum exhibited. Before the museums foundation, the statue used to be part of the façade of a prior side building of the museum.
The museum staff proposed us to find inspiration through this persona.
We created ‘Wulles’, a short, plumpy, furry ‘manimal’. Not very cultural, nor well behaved, he does know his way around the museum. He is mostly friendly, but can get angry when he believes he or others get treated unjust.
Apart from subtly marking the 12 stations of the tour with the station number and the wild mans fur, we made him pop up at points where navigation in the building is difficult.
